Getting Started

remxflightplan

To get started, create a flight plan using the camera setting for the Micasense RedEdge-MX or Altum sensors. Learn how to create a flight plan using your computer.

When creating a flight plan:

  • Ensure the flight path area is larger than the actual area of interest.
  • Set the side and front overlaps to 75%.
  • Set a proper speed and altitude. Slower speeds should be used at lower altitudes.
  • Plan to fly your mission within two and a half hours of local solar noon to prevent shadows from affecting data products.

Start Panel Capture

Once the flight plan has been created, select Start Panel Capture and follow the instructions on the screen.

  1. Go to the iOS Settings app and find the WIFI settings
  2. Select the MicaSense camera's WIFI
  3. Enter the password in all lowercase: micasense
  4. Navigate back to the Measure Ground Control app
  5. Open Camera Settings
    1. Once Camera Settings is selected a pop0up window will open automatically. Ensure the Storage, GPS Sats, DLS Status, and Time are all highlighted green.
    2. Select the Live View menu with the camera icon on the top of the screen and select All Bands from the drop down menu.
    3. Select the QR button with the loop icon and wait for the sensor to turn on. Pick up the aircraft and hover it over the reflectance panel. The QR button starts Automatic Detection mode and it will automatically detect the MicaSense reflectance panel and QR code. The sensor will automatically capture the panel and exit panel detection mode once the panel is detected. Find out more about MicaSense Live View
    4. Once the panel has been detected, open the settings menu on the top right side of the screen and select Disabled from the Auto-Capture Mode drop-down menu and select Save.
  6. Perform Pre-Flight Panel Capture
  7. Ensure Auto-Capture mode is "Disabled"
  8. Disconnect from MicaSense camera's WIFI

Step 5 has to be performed every time before and after every flight including battery swaps.

Takeoff

After the camera settings have been properly configured, select Next to begin the preflight checklist.

Because a third-party camera is being used, the camera check will be skipped during preflight. This will prompt a warning advising the user to ensure a micro SD card has been inserted into the sensor.

When the preflight checklist is done and the aircraft is ready for takeoff, verify that the sensor's WIFI has been disconnected, select Fly, and continue the flight as planned.

Please note that when using MicaSense sensors, the camera icon will not appear after an image is captured, users can verify the sensor is capturing images by looking at the decreasing image count on the top right corner of the screen.

Please note that the MicaSense camera's live view is not available during flight. The First Person View from the aircraft will still be available during flight.

Once the flight is done, please proceed with the after-flight Panel Capture. If a battery swap is required a panel capture is required before removing the battery and before resuming the flight.
